Created in 1963, 'Monoprint' offers a fascinating insight into Sam Francis’s highly experimental approach to printmaking and his continuous exploration of colour, space and composition. Rather than treating printmaking simply as a means of reproducing a fixed image, Francis used the printing process as an extension of his painting practice, experimenting with different combinations of the same printing plates to create entirely new compositions. In the present work, plates associated with 'An 8 Set–2', 'An 8 Set–3' and 'An 8 Set–5' are combined, layered and printed in configurations that differ from the final editioned works, allowing familiar forms to interact in unexpected ways. The result is not a conventional editioned print, but a unique experiment in which Francis explores how changes in colour, layering and the relationship between individual plates could fundamentally transform an image. Particularly unusual is its double-sided nature: a single sheet is printed on both recto and verso, creating two distinct and unique compositions. Brilliant passages of saturated colour float and overlap against the luminous BFK Rives paper, demonstrating the tension between pigment and open space that became central to Francis’s visual language. Signed by the artist in pencil and inscribed 'Monoprint 10/16', the work stands as a unique object within Francis’s graphic production, revealing printmaking not as an act of repetition, but as a medium for continuous experimentation and invention.
