Alexander Calder’s 'Magie Éolienne. No 6' exemplifies the artist’s mature language of abstract form, colour and movement. Bold geometric and organic shapes, such as circles, arcs and triangular forms, interlock across the surface in a composition that appears to hover between balance and motion. Calder’s characteristic palette of vivid primary colours, black and white creates a striking visual rhythm, while the shifting relationships between the forms evoke the sense of movement that lies at the heart of his artistic vocabulary.

Executed in the final decade of Calder’s career, the work demonstrates how the principles of his revolutionary mobiles could be translated into a two-dimensional medium. Without depicting movement literally, Calder creates an impression of wind, rotation and equilibrium through the precise placement of colour and form. 'Magie Éolienne. No 6' is a particularly compelling example of his late graphic work, distilling the essential elements of his oeuvre, movement, balance, colour and playful abstraction, into a remarkably direct and elegant composition.
