'Fête nautique' is a particularly accomplished interpretation of one of Raoul Dufy’s most characteristic subjects: the spectacle of sailing boats gathered along the French coast. Born in Le Havre, Dufy maintained a lifelong fascination with the sea, regattas and fashionable seaside life. Here, the rhythmic pattern of sails, flags and boats is animated by brilliant colour, capturing the sense of movement and festivity that became a hallmark of his mature work.

The print is also an important collaboration between Dufy and Jacques Villon

(1875-1963), one of the greatest printmakers of the twentieth century. Villon prepared the plates from a specially created design by Dufy, working in collaboration with and under the supervision of the artist. His mastery of colour aquatint allowed the luminosity and apparent spontaneity of Dufy’s painting to be translated into the technically demanding medium of printmaking.
