'New Bedroom Blonde Doodle' revisits one of Tom Wesselmann’s most celebrated subjects: the female nude within the intimate setting of the bedroom. First explored extensively in his Bedroom Paintings of the 1960s and 1970s, the subject allowed Wesselmann to combine the sensuality of the human figure with the bold colour, cropping and simplified forms that became central to his distinctive contribution to American Pop Art. In this later composition, however, the precise contours and flat areas of colour associated with his earlier work give way to a freer, more spontaneous line. The sweeping outlines of the blonde figure overlap with passages of brilliant red, blue, yellow and green, while large areas of untouched paper become an active part of the composition. The deliberately loose, almost drawn quality suggested by the title 'Doodle' reflects Wesselmann’s increasing interest in translating the immediacy of drawing into his mature graphic work. Both intimate and monumental, the closely cropped figure fills the composition and transforms a private bedroom scene into a bold study of line, colour and sensual form.
