Created in 1974, 'Composition ‘5 E’. Induction Chromatique' belongs to one of Carlos Cruz-Diez’s most important and historically significant series, developed from his groundbreaking investigations into colour as an autonomous and ever-changing phenomenon. Published by the legendary Parisian gallerist Denise René and printed at Atelier Marquet, this work dates from the artist’s formative Paris years, when his close collaboration with Denise René placed him at the very centre of the kinetic and optical art movement.

This is a particularly desirable early example of the Induction Chromatique series, a body of work that sought to make visible the fleeting optical effects of retinal colour perception. Through meticulously calibrated bands of colour, the composition generates chromatic vibrations and virtual hues that appear to shift before the viewer’s eyes, transforming perception into the true subject of the work.
