'Loops on Yellow' is a vibrant example of Alexander Calder’s late graphic work, translating the movement and rhythmic balance of his celebrated mobiles into two dimensions. Sweeping black loops move freely across the brilliant yellow ground, punctuated by Calder’s characteristic red and blue forms. Despite its apparent spontaneity, the composition is carefully balanced, with each element appearing to respond visually to those around it.

The looping lines are particularly evocative of the wire constructions and suspended elements that defined Calder’s sculptural practice. Throughout his career, Calder explored how a simple line could suggest movement through space; here, rather than physically moving, the forms create their own sense of momentum across the sheet. The strong yellow field heightens this effect, giving the composition an exceptional immediacy and joyful energy.
